JAKARTA - Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison showcased the first artificial intelligence (AI) based 5G call trial in Southeast Asia at the 2026 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
This demonstration was carried out with Nokia and NVIDIA as part of the development of AI-RAN (Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network) technology.
In the trial, AI and network intelligence work side by side, so that instructions, data, and video can be sent instantly across the country safely.
Indosat said this showed Indosat's commitment and efforts in designing the future in big cities and in remote areas far from data centers.
"This achievement not only proves that this technology works, but also ensures that every Indonesian, wherever they are, can feel the benefits of digitalization and AI," said President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Vikram Sinha in his statement.
Through AI-RAN, Indosat integrates AI capabilities directly into the network to work faster, smarter, and more responsive.
By minimizing latency, increasing energy efficiency, and optimizing spectrum utilization, the Indosat network becomes a platform that brings real impact in daily life.
"This first AI-based 5G call in Southeast Asia shows what is possible when leading innovators focus on delivering increasingly intelligent connectivity," added Pallavi Mahajan, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Nokia, Pallavi Mahajan.
Through this collaboration, Mahajan added, IOH, NVIDIA, and Nokia are reshaping the way networks operate while accelerating Indonesia's digital ambitions.
"We are proud to bring our technology and expertise into a collaboration that empowers local talent and sets a new global benchmark for AI-based cellular networks," he concluded.
Meanwhile, NVIDIA Senior Vice President, Ronnie Vasishta, hopes that the presence of AI-RAN can be a platform that brings advanced AI applications to the public and business actors.
As a follow-up, Indosat plans to build four AI-RAN clusters in various regions of Indonesia to test the implementation on an operational scale.
The company also strengthens talent development through the AI-RAN Research Center in Surabaya, which includes immersive learning in global innovation laboratories to increase the capacity of local engineers in the field of AI and networks.
