JAKARTA - Google has again scored important achievements in the world of artificial intelligence. The Gemini app officially shifted OpenAI's ChatGPT from its peak position as the most popular free app on the United States iPhone App Store. This news comes shortly after Google released a new feature called Nano Banana, a sophisticated photo editing tool that appears to be key to Gemini's soaring popularity.
Based on the latest App Store data, Gemini is now in the number one position of the free app for iPhones in the US, as well as pushing ChatGPT down to second place. Not only that, Gemini is also the number one free app for the iPad in the same area.
Logan Kilpatrick, as Google AI Studio's product lead and Gemini API, became the first to announce this news through his upload on X (Twitter). He shared a screenshot showing the App Store's latest ranking list. Separate verification also confirmed that as of Monday afternoon local time, Gemini was still at the top.

This achievement is the first time for Gemini to successfully rank at the top. Previously, AI applications such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek from China have also tasted the top position of the App Store. Meanwhile, Meta Threads currently occupies third place, followed by Elon Musk's X in fourth place, and the Google Search app in fifth place.
Gemini's surge in popularity is strongly believed to be related to the presence of the Nano Banana update. This feature allows users to upload photos and then perform various forms of direct editing without changing the consistency of the main subject in the image.
With Nano Banana, users can change costumes, change the location of photos, combine two different images, to perform a series of gradual editing with smooth and realistic results. Google provides free access to this feature for all Gemini users, even though paid users get higher usage limits.

It doesn't stop there, Google is also committed to continuing to present new features on the Gemini app this year, both on iPhones and other platforms, in order to expand reach and improve user experience.
With this achievement, Google shows that competition in the AI application market is getting fiercer. ChatGPT's position, which previously dominated, is now facing serious challenges, while Gemini managed to prove himself capable of attracting users' attention with new innovations.
