JAKARTA Qualcomm announced plans to create a data center's Central Processing Unit (CPU) on Monday, May 19. This CPU will be developed using special technology from NVIDIA.

"With the ability to connect our dedicated processors to the NVIDIA rack scale architecture, we are advancing our shared vision of high-performance energy-efficient computing to the data center," said Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, quoted via Reuters.

Through this announcement, Qualcomm wants to show that they will return to the data center CPU market. The Snapdragon manufacturer developed an Arm-based CPU in the 2010s and tested it directly on Meta's platform.

However, due to the issue of cost cuts and legal challenges, Qualcomm had to stop developing its CPU. After a team containing a former Apple chip designer worked at Qualcomm, it looks like the company is back motivated to create a data center CPU.

This development plan has actually been discussed quietly since 2021. The company has also discussed with Meta about the CPU they will develop according to sources familiar with the matter.

In fact, some time ago, Qualcom admitted that it had pocketed a letter of understanding with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) company in Saudi Arabia, namely Humain. The company will assist Qualcomm in creating data center CPUs.

Not much information about this data center CPU. However, Qualcomm explains that their future chips will use NVIDIA technology. This will help them communicate with the NVIDIA GPU.
