NASA And IBM Research Release AI-Based Basic Models In Open Sources

JAKARTA NASA and IBM Research formed a partnership last May to create a basic model called Prithvi Weather-Climate. After being developed for four months, this basic model was finally released.

NASA administration Bill Nelson, via platform X, said that this weather and climate model had been released in open sources on Monday, September 23. Thanks to the support of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Prithvi Weather-Climate can better detect weather.

"NASA and IBM Research are releasing new weather and climate models supported by AI," Nelson said. "With AI, we are accelerating our efforts to protect society and understand our changing world."

The functionality of this basic model is still in line with NASA's and IBM Research's promises when starting collaboration. Prithvi Weather-Climate can be used to detect and predict bad weather patterns, create targeted weather forecasts, and improve spatial resolution on global climate simulations.

The researchers were able to access Prithvi Weather-Climate through the Hugging Face platform. NASA said that this AI-based basic model was released along with a model of parametrizing the gravitational waves that had been refined so scientists could already take into account the impact of gravitational waves on the weather.

Kevin Murphy, Head of NASA Science Data Officer, said that this basic model was designed for researchers from various parts of the world. Through the launch of this basic weather and climate model, NASA wants to provide the best scientific data.

"Our open approach to this model sharing invites the global community to explore and take advantage of the capabilities we have developed, ensuring that NASA's investment enriches and benefits all," NASA said.
