JAKARTA - Social media giant Meta Platforms Inc., will notify Brazilians of how they use personal data to train generative artificial intelligence (AI). The move comes after a request from the country's data protection watchdog.
Meta users in Brazil will begin receiving notifications via email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram from Tuesday, September 3. They will also be given the option to reject the company's use of personal data to train generative AI, Meta said in a statement.
In July, Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) suspended Meta's new privacy policy regarding the use of personal data to train AI. However, this suspension was lifted on Friday 30 August after Meta agreed to provide users with information.

In the same month, Meta temporarily suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, including tools used to create popular AI stickers on the WhatsApp messaging platform. Brazil is the second largest market for WhatsApp.
At the time, Meta stated that the termination of the AI tool was carried out while negotiating with ANPD to answer the authorities' doubts regarding the use of a generating AI.
When asked by Reuters on Tuesday, September 3 whether the tool would be reactivated after ANPD lifted the suspension, Meta only confirmed that the suspension was in place as long as the company negotiated with ANPD.
