JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) continues to accelerate the construction of the Way Apu Dam in Buru Regency, Maluku Province. As of June 20, 2026, the physical progress of the dam has reached 86.91 percent and is projected to be one of the pillars of national food self-sufficiency in the eastern region of Indonesia.

The construction of the Way Apu Dam is carried out by the Maluku River Basin Agency (BWS) of the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of PU. Currently, work is focused on completing the final stage towards full operation so that the benefits can be immediately felt by the community.

Minister of PU, Dody Hanggodo, said the construction of the dam is an important part in supporting national food security and self-sufficiency through the provision of reliable water for the agricultural sector.

"We agree that water resources infrastructure is very important to achieve food self-sufficiency. Dams are not only physical buildings to hold water, but also part of a system that ensures the availability of water for agricultural land sustainably through an integrated irrigation network," said Dody in a written statement, Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The Way Apu dam is designed to have a capacity of 50.05 million cubic meters. The dam will be the main source of water for the development of agricultural areas in Buru Regency.

The existence of this water infrastructure is projected to be able to serve an irrigation area of 10,562 hectares so that it can increase the intensity of planting and agricultural productivity of local people.

In addition to supporting the agricultural sector, the Way Apu Dam will also provide raw water of 0.550 cubic meters per second to meet the needs of the community and support economic activities in the surrounding area.

Another function is as a flood controller. The dam is estimated to be able to reduce flood discharge to 394 cubic meters per second so as to reduce the risk of flooding that threatens settlements, agricultural land, and infrastructure in the downstream area.

Not only that, the Way Apu Dam area is also being prepared to become a new tourist destination in Maluku. A number of supporting facilities have been built, ranging from observation towers, viewpoints, parking areas, landscape areas to road access to the dam site.

With these various benefits, the Way Apu Dam is expected to be able to improve the welfare of the people of Buru Regency as well as strengthen Maluku's contribution to inclusive and sustainable national development.
