Platform X Accused Of Destroying Anti-Terrorism Group Credibility, Here's Why!

JAKARTA - A technology industry organization engaged in counter-terrorism expressed concern about content posted by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Elon Musk's platform X. They are also worried that X's membership on the board of the organization could undermine their credibility. This was first reported by The Sunday Times.

Members of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) believe that the group's credibility is threatened by membership X and its position on the board, according to a report by The Sunday Times. GIFCT also includes big social media groups such as Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube owned by Alphabet.

X Corp and GIFCT have not yet responded to requests for comment.

The Sunday Times reports that X, formerly known as Twitter, is now the most accessible social media platform to find Hamas videos, referring to reports from the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that counters extremism and antisemitism. Within 10 minutes, CST researchers managed to find propaganda videos from terrorist groups banned by the British government, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in X.

According to The Sunday Times, the statement in the 2023 annual report of the independent advisory committee GIFCT expressing concerns about trust and online security was addressed to X. The advisory agency said it was increasingly concerned over a significant reduction in its trust and security capabilities online for several platforms, as well as a negative decline in the priority of the issue, which has an impact on the company's ability to moderate extremist content online.

The Sunday Times also reports that Elon Musk has allowed extremists previously barred from returning to X, even letting anyone pay for a verification sign, and sacking most of Musk's content moderation team as part of Musk's strategy to turn X into a "free speech platform."

GIFCT was founded in 2017 under pressure from the US and European governments. The Sunday Times said that X, who is the founding member of the organization, has now failed to make a full financial contribution to the anti-terrorism organization.
