JAKARTA - Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi stated that he would limit access to a free Virtual Private Network (VPN) as an effort to eradicate online gambling in Indonesia.

Budi also said that he had discussed the VPN restrictions with the Director General of Post and Information Organization Wayan Tony Supriyanto and the Director General of Informatics Application Hokky Situngkir.

"Yesterday, Mr. Hokky had a meeting with Mr. Wayan, we will close the free VPN so that access to the network is also reduced for small communities to condition (spread) online gambling," Budi said before the Opening Ceremony DTI-CX 2024 at JCC Senayan on Wednesday, July 31.

Because according to Budi, online gambling is one of the biggest challenges in digital transformation efforts in Indonesia today. Thus, collaboration with various parties is needed.

"I deliberately have to include the online gambling issue so that it is clear that this is the dark side of digitalization. This digitization is the most basic principle and the main goal is to make people the most productive," he said.

In an effort to suppress wider online gambling access, the government through the online gambling eradication Task Force has also blocked internet access from Cambodia and the Philippines.

In addition, Kominfo has also collaborated with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the Central Board of Catholic Youth to eradicate online gambling.
