JAKARTA - Taiwan law enforcement accused suppliers of Apple from China of carrying out illegal operations in Taiwan and trying to hijack tech talent, as well as stating that US-affected Chinese companies have established illegal operations in the island nation.

Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, has stepped up efforts to stop what it considers a fraudulent and illegal activity by the bamboo curtain country companies to steal knowledge and hijack talent.

Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Bureau of Investigation on Thursday evening 30 May named Luxshare Precision Industry as one of eight Chinese companies "who came to Taiwan to illegally hijack our top tech talent". However, the bureau did not provide further details.

Luxshare has not immediately responded to a request for comment.

The investigative bureau also named video surveillance equipment maker Zhejiang Dahua Technology, which the United States added to the blacklist in 2019 for Beijing's treatment of Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region.

Zhejiang Dahua set up "two private locations" in Taiwan and tried to avoid an investigation by listing his employees as working for other companies, the bureau said, also without providing further details.

Zhejiang Dahua has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Taiwan, which is home to chipmaker giant TSMC and accounts for most of the world's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity, sees China's efforts as a threat to its chip expertise.

"The facilitators of mainland Chinese companies in Taiwan should have no illusion and challenge the determination to enforce the law," the bureau said, adding that it would "firmly crack down on illegal business operations and talent hijackers".

Thursday's announcement was the result of a month's sweep of alleged illegal operations by Chinese technology companies.

In 2022, Taiwan prosecutors accused Luxshare of stealing commercial secrets from Taiwanese competitor Catcher Technology and hijacking its workforce to win orders from Apple, saying they had indicted 14 people.
