Commission XI of the DPR is still waiting for Prabowo to nominate the BI Governor

JAKARTA - Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR) has not yet received a mandate from the DPR Consultative Body (Banmus) to carry out a feasibility and suitability test (fit and proper test) for the candidate governor of the Bank Indonesia (BI). The process is still waiting for President Prabowo Subianto to submit the name of the candidate governor of BI to the DPR.

Deputy Chairman of Commission XI of the DPR, Dolfie Othniel, said that according to the provisions of the Bank Indonesia Law, the president has the authority to propose a candidate for the Governor of BI to obtain the approval of the DPR through Commission XI.

"According to the law, the president will propose a candidate for the governor of the BI to get the approval of the DPR (Commission XI). Currently, to my knowledge, Commission XI has not received an assignment from Banmus to conduct a fit and proper test," said Dolfie Othniel in his statement, Monday, July 27.

The statement confirmed that until now the process in the DPR had not entered the discussion stage because the name of the candidate governor had not been submitted by the government.

Separately, Deputy Chairman of Commission XI of the DPR, Mohamad Hekal, reminded that the process of changing the leadership of the Bank Indonesia should not disrupt the stability of the rupiah exchange rate or the confidence of market participants in the central bank.

Previously, Bank Indonesia on Monday morning announced the resignation of Perry Warjiyo from the position of BI governor. The resignation was voluntary for personal reasons.

Following the decision, the Bank Indonesia Board of Governors (RDG) meeting on Sunday, July 26, appointed BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as the interim governor of BI. The appointment refers to Article 50 paragraph (2) of the Bank Indonesia Law.

At a press conference at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, Monday evening, Destry confirmed that the government had not submitted the name of a candidate to replace Perry Warjiyo to the DPR.

He explained that the mechanism for filling the position of BI governor had been clearly regulated in the Bank Indonesia Law. If a governor voluntarily resigns, the replacement process begins through the nomination of members of the Board of Governors who meet the requirements, then determined by the president after obtaining the consent of the DPR through the mechanism of testing the eligibility of the BI governor candidate.

"So everything is already in the Bank Indonesia Law. So it will be followed by such provisions," said Destry.

With the name of the candidate not yet submitted by President Prabowo Subianto, Commission XI of the DPR is still waiting for the official assignment from Banmus before scheduling the fit and proper test for the BI governor candidate. This process is an important step to ensure the continuity of the leadership of Bank Indonesia while maintaining the stability of the financial system and market confidence during the transition period.

According to Hekal, the role of Bank Indonesia in maintaining monetary stability must continue even though the leadership transition process is underway.

"Now, what is important in the process of changing the governor of Bank Indonesia, the role of Bank Indonesia in maintaining the stability of the exchange rate and the value of the rupiah must also be maintained," explained Hekal, quoted from Antara.

He also believes that the appointment of BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as acting governor of BI is able to maintain the credibility of Bank Indonesia in the eyes of industry players and the financial market.

"The appointment of Mrs. Destry as the interim governor of Bank Indonesia is in accordance with the BI Law and I am confident that she is capable of carrying out this task and reassuring all industry players that BI can carry out its duties well," he added.
