JAKARTA - Indonesia is preparing itself to welcome the era of the arrival of electric cars (electric vehicles). Electric cars are not only a symbol of technological progress but also a form of an effort to provide environmentally friendly transportation.

The trend of electric cars has occurred in several countries in recent years. In fact, China and several countries in Europe are starting to rely on electric vehicles, including electric cars, as their mode of transportation.

As reported by VOI from the site iea.org, sales of electric cars reached 2.1 million globally in 2019. This figure is an increase compared to 2018. Electric cars accounted for 2.6% of total global car sales and recorded an increase of 40% year on year (YoY).

In 2010, the number of electric cars on the world's roads was only around 17,000 units. Meanwhile, in 2019 the number has increased many times, reaching 7.2 million. Of these, 47 percent are in China.

Indonesian electric car 2021

In the field of renewable technology, Indonesia does not want to be left behind by following the trend of electric cars. The government has even started to compile regulations related to the use of electric vehicles. This is reflected in the issuance of Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 55 of 2019 concerning the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Program for Road Transportation.

In this regulation, President Jokowi said that regulations are needed to improve energy efficiency, as well as energy security and conservation in the transportation sector.

The regulation also aims at realizing clean energy, improving clean air quality and being environmentally friendly, and proving the government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to regulations and regulations, Indonesia has also begun to build supporting infrastructure for electric vehicles, such as building electric charging stations. PLN has also helped build battery charging stations spread across several big cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Tangerang, Semarang, Surabaya, and Bali.
