Shocking news came from BYD in the construction of its factory in Bahia City, Brazil. Local authorities found as many as 163 workers from China working like "slavery" at the construction site of the factory owned by the automotive company.

Launching from Reuters on Thursday, December 26, the workers were employed in China by another company and brought to Brazil inappropriately. They work with long working hours and even exceed the time permitted by local legislation up to seven days a week.

Then, these workers were found in inhumane conditions and there were other labor violations.

According to one of the labor inspectors, Liane Durao said at least 107 people had their passports withheld by the company's superiors and their safety conditions were not met.

"We found that as many as 163 workers were carried out in conditions such as slavery. The minimum safety condition was not fulfilled in their work environment," said Durao.

In addition, this case is also widely discussed on social media X.

In a statement, BYD revealed that it had cut ties with the companies that employed the workers and added that it was working with the authorities in providing assistance to workers.

The employment authority did not reveal the name of the company involved in employing the worker.

With the slavery practice in the construction of BYD factories in the country, the project has been officially suspended for a while.

This factory is planned to start operating in March 2025 as well as a strategic step BYD to expand its market outside Asia. Previously, BYD had invested 3 billion reais (around Rp. 7.4 trillion) to support the construction of EV factories in Samba country.
