JAKARTA - Director General of Informatics Application Samuel Abrijani Pangerapan said that the issue of TikTok in the United States which was being discussed was a trade war.

According to him, Indonesia has its own regulations to maintain the security of user data, so there is no need to worry about the user data being given to the Chinese government, such as what the US government is worried about.

"We have rules. If you talk like that, it's a matter of trade war, don't go there. If you talk like that, it could be that others can take (the market opportunity, China will take it, will the company not take it?" Sammy said on Friday, March 15.

The rules that Sammy means are the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP) which will take effect from October 2024, as well as the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE).

Referring to the policies in force in Indonesia, Sammy said that Kominfo did not want to rush into the same decision as the US to block access to its people to TikTok.

"We have rules for PDP, ITE, misusing (data) is not allowed. If you use AI, there are also SE guidelines, if other countries we don't interfere but just let it go first," he said further.

He also added, "So far we haven't seen any direction there, we haven't wanted to regulate it too quickly."

Previously, the Draft Law that would prohibit TikTok from operating in the country had been passed by the United States House of Representatives (DPR).

If TikTok wants to resume operations, then TikTok will have to sell its shares. Because if not, the US government suspects the app collects sensitive US user data to be provided to the Chinese government.
