Leonardo Working On Europe's First Space Military Cloud Project

JAKARTA - Leonardo, Italy's state-owned company, announced on Monday 19 February that the Ministry of Defense had asked to study the development of the space military cloud architecture project, the first in Europe.

Projects known as MILSCA will provide the Italian government and its armed forces with computing systems, cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), and storage capacity directly in space.

During a two-year study, Leonardo will team up with Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space, two joint ventures between defense groups and Italian aerospace with French Thales.

The project is in line with Leonardo's main goal of focusing on the space industry in the next few years - key to defense and security in the future - and establishing a connected multi-domain digital platform, which aims to support its traditional products.

MILSCA will guarantee user access to strategic data such as communications, earth observations, and navigation data, anywhere and anytime.

This can provide higher speed and flexibility in processing and sharing information, with 100 Terabytes of data storage on Earth and in space on each satellite and processing power of more than 250 TFLOPS, or 250 thousand billion operations per second.

In the first phase of the study, the architecture will be defined, while in the second phase a digital "twin" will be developed.

"In multi-domain scenarios, management, security, and rapid exchange the increasing amount of data, most of which are tactical, are strategic elements for national defense. We will be the first in Europe to develop the Cloud Angkasa project..." Chief Innovation Officer Leonardo, Simone Ungaro, said in a statement.
