European Union Launches AI Factories To Encourage Development Of Artificial Intelligence Among Startups

JAKARTA - Startups in Europe will gain easier access to supercomputers devoted to artificial intelligence (AI) to help them develop a general purpose AI model. This is part of a new integrated resource center to increase the adoption of the technology, the European Commission announced on Wednesday, January 25.

The EU executive agency's proposal follows last month's agreement between EU member states and legislators on key rules for large and powerful AI models such as those supported by Microsoft, ChatGPT, and Google, Bard, as well as their use.

The Commission states that integrated resource centers, or so-called 'AI Factories', will help AI startups and researchers develop algorithms, test and validate large-scale AI models, as well as facilitate their access to supercomputers devoted to AI.

"Today, we announce the launch of AI Factories, collecting 'raw materials' for AI: computing power, data, algorithms, and talent," said EU industry chief Thierry Breton, in a statement.

Europe competes with the United States and China to become leaders in this technology, which is used in various industries and applications.
