JAKARTA - China's Ministry of Public Security plans to launch a new blockchain technology-based platform called RealDID to verify the identity of its citizens.

According to a press release for the event held on December 12 by Blockchain Service Network (BSN), a Chinese blockchain company, the project, which is planned with the Chinese government, will have many use cases.

These include confirmation of the personal name, protection and certification of encrypted personal data, personal login, business identity, personal identification certificate service, and information voucher about personal identity.

The app will allow Chinese citizens to register and log in to online portals anonymously using DID addresses, ensuring that transactions and data remain private between individuals and businesses.

While there is no official information about the launch date or when it will be implemented among China's very large population of about 1.4 billion people, the announcement says that the project has "large potential" in ensuring personal privacy.

The China National Information Center operates BSN and is linked to major Chinese technology companies such as China Mobile and China UnionPay.

This comes after news in late October that six Chinese social media platforms, including the popular WeChat, imposed a mandate in which content creators with more than 500,000 to 1 million followers must publicly display their real names and financial support.

China recently accelerated many initiatives and regulations around developing technology, including the development of artificial intelligence, central bank digital currencies (CBDC), and cryptocurrencies. China is also working to become less dependent on semiconductor chips produced in the United States by increasing domestic production.
