Pew Research Center: There Is An Increase In TikTok Users In Accessing News To 43%

JAKARTA - According to a recent study from the Pew Research Center, the percentage of TikTok users who regularly access news through the app rose to 43% in 2023 from 22% a year earlier. The study also found that half of the adult users in the United States got at least part of their news from social media.

News organizations are competing with TikTok and other social media platforms to get the attention of consumers and advertising budgets, many of which are looking for ways to attract the attention of TikTok's big and desirable Gen Z audience.

Pew's analysis of news consumption by Americans, based on a survey of 8,842 US adults conducted from September 25 to October 1, 2023, found that websites or news applications were used by 67% of respondents.

According to Pew's findings, Meta's Facebook is the most popular social media platform for news, with 30% of Americans saying they regularly access the news there, followed by YouTube with 26%, Instagram with 16%, and TikTok with 14%.

News consumption on Facebook remains high despite Meta trying to reduce the prevalence of news and other civil content on its platform in recent years in response to regulatory stress in key markets around the world.

Pew found that regular news consumers on Nextdoor, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are more likely to be women. While regular news consumers on Reddit, X, LinkedIn, and Alphabet's YouTube tend to be male.

Under Elon Musk's ownership, regular news consumers on platform X, formerly called Twitter, have about half of them balanced political affiliates, with 46% Republican views or Republican support, and 49% Democratic views or support Democrats, according to Pew.
