JAKARTA - Nvidia has dominated the artificial intelligence computing chip market. Now, this US company will challenge Intel's position, which has long dominated personal computers (PCs).

Nvidia has quietly begun designing a central processing unit (CPU) that will run Microsoft's Windows operating system and use technology from Arm Holdings. This was conveyed by two people familiar with the matter to Reuters.

The artificial intelligence chip enthusiast is now targeting the PC CPU market after successfully dominating the artificial intelligence computing sector. Nvidia's new move is part of Microsoft's efforts to help chip companies build Arm-based processors for Windows PCs.

Microsoft's plan is aimed at challenging Apple, which has nearly doubled its market share in the three years since releasing its own Arm-based chips inside for Mac computers. That's revealing, according to preliminary third-quarter data from research firm IDC.

According to two sources, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also plans to make chips for PCs with Arm technology.

"Nvidia and AMD could sell PC chips as early as 2025," said one source as quoted by Reuters. Nvidia and AMD will join Qualcomm, which has been making Arm-based chips for laptops since 2016.

At an event Tuesday, October 24 that will be attended by Microsoft executives, including vice president of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, Qualcomm plans to reveal more details about the flagship chip designed by a team of ex-Apple engineers.

Nvidia shares closed up 3.84%, while Intel shares fell 3.06% after media reports regarding Nvidia's plans. Arm shares also rose 4.89% at the close.

Nvidia spokesperson Ken Brown, AMD spokesperson Brandi Marina, Arm spokesperson Kristen Ray, and Microsoft spokesperson Pete Wootton all declined to comment on the report.

The efforts of Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm could shake up the PC industry previously dominated by Intel, which is now increasingly under pressure from Apple. Apple's custom chips have given Mac computers better battery life and fast performance that rivals chips that use more energy. Executives at Microsoft have noticed how efficient Apple's Arm-based chips are, including in artificial intelligence processing, and want to achieve similar performance.
