JAKARTA - A Russian court fined two million rubles (IDR 366.8 million) to the Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, on Thursday 27 April for not removing content deemed "forbidden content" related to the Russian military. This was first reported by Interfax.

This is the seventh fine imposed on Wikimedia in 2023 for not deleting prohibited information. The total fine now stands at 8.4 million rubles (IDR 1.5 billion).

The latest fine is imposed for not deleting articles about a military unit containing "classified military information" about military locations, compositions and equipment, including information related to the progress of what Russia calls a special military operation in Ukraine.

Wikimedia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Wikimedia previously said that the information complained by Russian authorities had been well verified and was in accordance with Wikipedia standards.

Wikipedia is one of the independent sources of information that has remained in Russia since the government intensified its online content enforcement after Moscow invaded Ukraine last year.

"We haven't blocked Wikipedia, there are currently no such plans," said Digital Affairs Minister Maksut Shadaev as quoted by Interfax last week.
