JAKARTA - The news about ChatGPT from OpenAI which is supported by Microsoft has spread all over the world, including in China. This strengthened shares of artificial intelligence (AI) technology companies and prompted companies in China to announce similar projects.

Chinese technology companies such as Baidu, Alibaba, and several small startups have been working on AI projects for years. Chatbots in China are mostly focused on social interaction, whereas ChatGPT, which learns from large amounts of data to answer user requests in a human-like way, is better at more professional tasks, such as programming and essay writing.

Here is a list of Chinese technology companies that recently announced AI technologies:

SENSETIME

Chinese AI company SenseTime launched a number of new AI-powered products, including a chatbot and image generator based on its SenseNova AI model.

BAIDU

On March 16, Baidu introduced its highly anticipated AI chatbot known as Ernie Bot. Currently only available to a limited number of users who apply for a passcode.

ALIBABA

Alibaba announced on February 8 that it is conducting internal testing of a ChatGPT-style tool. On April 7, Chinese media reported that Alibaba was looking for a company to test their Tongyi Qianwen AI chatbot.

TENCENT

Tencent Holdings set up a development team to work on a chatbot similar to ChatGPT which will be called "HunyuanAide". Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters in February. However, Tencent has yet to provide a clear response regarding this project.

FUDAN UNIVERSITY TEAM

The team from China's Fudan University launched a chatbot called MOSS which is similar to ChatGPT on February 20. However, the platform failed within hours of launch due to too many visitors and the team apologized, saying that this model was still very immature and far from ChatGPT level.

JD.COM

JD.com said on February 10 that it plans to launch a product similar to ChatGPT which will be called ChatJD and will be targeted to serve other businesses.

CHINA TELECOM

China Telecom is developing an industrial version of ChatGPT for telecom, which will use AI in some customer service functions, Chinese local media reported on February 18.

NETEASE

Game company NetEase plans to use big language model technology to enhance their education business.

360 SECURITY TECHNOLOGY INC

360 Security Technology says it has a language model technology but can't give a clear indication of when it will launch related products.

KUAISHOU TECHNOLOGY

Short video app Kuaishou Technology is conducting research on large language models, which it will use to improve its products such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based customer service, the Paper newspaper reported on February 9.

INSPUR ELECTRONIC INFORMATION INDUSTRY

Inspur Electronic Information Industry stated on its investor relations website that the company has been investing in Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) for a long time, from arithmetic to algorithms to the application of this technology.

KUNLUN TECH

Beijing-based mobile game company Kunlun Tech announced plans to launch a Chinese version of ChatGPT this year, and the source code will be open source, the company announced on its WeChat account on Thursday.

The company also announced in a separate statement that on Wednesday, April 5 they will be embedding ChatGPT into the Norway-based Opera web browser.
