JAKARTA - Kaspersky security company found hundreds of phishing pages aimed at stealing data and information from the PlayerUnknown's Battleground (PUBG) game account.
"The phishing page we found was designed in a very convincing way, both in design and in the interface, which is usually very familiar to gamers," said security expert at Kaspersky, Tatyana Shcherbakova in a statement received by VOI, Wednesday, November 25.
According to Tatyana, PUBG games, especially mobile platforms, have just started their newest season by presenting the latest items and mechanics. Game developers often offer small incentives in exchange for playing their games.
This clearly keeps cybercriminals, like scammers, not missing a good opportunity to take advantage of game updates. Kaspersky itself has identified as many as 260 phishing pages, which offer users the opportunity to win new items.
To get the prize, users only need to submit their game account via their Twitter or Facebook profile.
After a failed entry, the user will be asked to provide additional information, including the alias they use in the game, their phone number and other personal details.
As a result, the scammers got not only the user's social media accounts but also these additional personal details - all these efforts were aimed at selling the user's game account and making a profit.
In order to avoid becoming a victim of phishing with this scheme, Kaspersky advises gamers not to join in any sweepstakes, apart from the official game website, then also check information through official sources. If the related activity does exist, game developers will likely not keep it a secret.
