JAKARTA - On Wednesday, July 13, Reddit announced its new partnership with GIPHY, an American online database and search engine that allows users to search for shared GIFs.

Along with the partnership announcement, the company said that starting today, all Reddit users will be able to use GIPHY to add GIFs to comments on supported subreddits.

This means that not all subreddits allow Reddit users to share GIFs using the GIPHY integration. This new functionality is an opt-in feature for SFW (Safe for Work) and non-quarantined subreddits. This means that moderators can decide whether or not users can use GIFs.

Detailed on the Giphy blog, for all newly created subreddits, the feature will be available automatically, with the ability for moderators to opt out.

Previously, the GIF in comments feature was only available for Powerups. Powerups are community subscriptions that provide a way for redditors to give back to specific communities by getting together to unlock community benefits.

However, looking at the feedback users have given over the past 2 years, this feature is proving to be quite successful on Reddit.

"We've had great feedback from mods and users alike, while monitoring beta participation, number of communities unlocking benefits, and free use of Premium Powerups," Reddit said in its announcement.

It was this evaluation of success that led the company to its decision to expand the availability of GIFs in the comments to all Reddit users.
