Chelsea Loans Euro 2020 Champion Emerson To Olympique Lyon, Valued At IDR 8.46 Billion

JAKARTA - Chelsea has officially loaned Italian national team full-back Emerson Palmieri to Ligue 1 club, Olympique Lyon.

Emerson, who initially joined Chelsea from AS Roma in 2018, has struggled to get regular playing time since joining Stamford Bridge.

The Blues decided to give Emerson more playing time by loaning him to the French club.

Lyon will use the services of the Brazilian-born player for the 2021-2022 season, and they also have the option to make him permanently next summer.

"Olympique Lyonnais announces the arrival of the defender and double European Champion (with Italy and Chelsea), Emerson Palmieri until 30 June 2022", the French club said, as quoted by Reuters on Friday.

"This loan, at a cost of 500.000 euros, to which a maximum bonus of 500.000 euros can be added, will include a purchase option".

"Olympique Lyonnais welcomes the arrival of Emerson, who will become the third player, defender, and international player for Italy in the club's history, after Fabio Grosso (2007-2009) and Mattia de Sciglio last season".

Emerson has made just 71 appearances for Chelsea in total over the last three-and-a-half years. He is more often a cover for players like Marcos Alonso and Ben Chilwell.

The 27-year-old has only managed two goals and five assists for Chelsea, but has medals for the Europa League, Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.

Emerson is the fourth Chelsea senior squad player on loan this summer after Billy Gilmour, Michy Batshuayi, and Kenedy, who have joined Norwich, Besiktas, and Flamengo respectively.
