JAKARTA - Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, is proud of the achievement of the national weightlifter, Eko Yuli Irawan, who won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. According to her, the historic achievement of the lifter who was born in Lampung 32 years ago is truly extraordinary. Because he managed to get the most medals throughout the Olympics.

“Performing in the Olympics is a dream for all athletes. However, Eko Yuli Irawan has not only performed, but he has made history as an Indonesian national athlete by winning the most medals throughout the Olympics. I really salute Eko's achievement,” said Puan in Jakarta, Monday, July 26.

Prior to winning a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Eko Yuli Irawan also won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, then bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Not only making history, according to Puan, Eko's achievements can also be used as role models for other athletes. Even the young generation of the nation in general in all fields.

"Eko's life story, who was born to a simple family and once worked herding goats, and has now transformed into an 'olympian' who made history and made the nation's name proud, is extraordinary," said Puan.

"Eko's inspirational life story from 'zero to hero' deserves to be an example for our nation's young generation," added the former Deputy Chairperson of the National Steering Committee for the 2018 Asian Games.

Regarding the silver medal obtained by Eko, Puan believes that this achievement is a kind of 'stairway' for other Red and White athletes to reach the gold medal, and finally can bring Indonesia to the top 40, according to the national target at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"Previously, Windy Cantika Aisah won bronze, now Eko Yuli Irawan won silver, and hopefully in the future, our athletes will achieve gold medals," said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

Moreover, added Puan, in the badminton sport which is the mainstay of Indonesia, the Red and White athletes have not been defeated in the preliminary phase.

"This is a very good start to finally be able to make the nation proud," said Puan.
