Erick Will Discuss The 2025 SEA Games Target With The Federation

Many of Indonesia's leading sports are not contested at the 2025 SEA Games (doc. SEA Games 2025).

JAKARTA - Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, will soon discuss the 2025 SEA Games target with sports federations (sports) to find out how many gold medals Indonesia can get.

So far, Indonesia has not set a definite target for the biennial multi-pronged sporting event because Thailand as the host reduces many match numbers.

"We will hold a back-to-back SEA Games meeting. One, regarding the budget. Second, regarding starting to comb through what sports we can send," said Erick in Jakarta.

Indonesia is aiming for the target of finishing in third place in the final standings for medals in this year's edition of the SEA Games. However, the number of match numbers reduced by the host can disturb the target.

A total of 41 match numbers that previously contributed to Indonesia's gold medal at the 2023 Cambodian SEA Games will not be contested in Thailand later.

The Minister of Youth and Sports explained that currently the exact gold medal that Indonesia can get is 46, which reflects the previous appreciation in Cambodia. In fact, to finish the top three, Indonesia needs to get twice that amount.

"Now the budget is good. We have to really dig up where we got the 82 to 90 gold. Today we only have 46," he said.

The 2025 SEA Games preparation budget increased significantly from IDR 10 billion to IDR 60 billion. With this increase, the number of athletes departing also increased from 120 to around 700 to 800 athletes.

The next SEA Games will take place on 9-20 December 2025 in Thailand. A total of 50 sports and 574 match numbers will be contested.
