Contracting Malaria When Defending Gabon National Team, Aubameyang: I Will Come Back Stronger Than Ever
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

JAKARTA - Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revealed on Friday morning western Indonesia time that he contracted malaria while defending the Gabon national team during the international break last month.

In his personal Instagram account, @auba, Aubameyang announced the news through a photo upload showing him on a hospital bed.

"Unfortunately, I contracted malaria while defending the Gabon national team a few weeks ago," wrote Aubameyang in his upload caption.

After returning from helping Gabon print tickets to the Africa Cup of Nations finals, Aubameyang appeared in an English League match against Liverpool and the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Slavia Prague.

However, Aubameyang was absent when Arsenal beat Sheffield United last weekend and was not part of the squad that flew to the Czech Republic for the second leg against Slavia.

"I spent a few days in the hospital this week, but I feel better every day, thanks to doctors who are able to detect and treat this virus quickly," said Aubameyang.

"I have not felt like myself in recent weeks, but will come back stronger than before," he wrote in the same post.

Arsenal, who are currently in ninth place in the Premier League, host Fulham on Sunday (18/6).
