Gundogan Retirement Plan Involves Blood And Emotional Bonds With Turkey

JAKARTA - Ilkay Gundogan is indeed a German citizen. However, he could not betray that he was flowing full of Turkish blood.

He was born in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 34 years ago on October 24, 1990. Gundogan's parents are Turkish.

Gundogan was originally born in Germany because his father's grandfather was a transfer mine worker from Balikesir, Turkey, to Ruhr (Germany).

Realizing his identity, Gundogan has already signaled that he will not retire at Manchester City.

Gundogan declined to rule out the possibility of joining his childhood club Galatasaray until he hung up his boots.

The signal came after the 34-year-old midfielder only signed a one-year contract when he returned to Etihad from Barcelona in August 2024.

The Citizens did provide an option for a one-year extension. However, Gundogan doesn't seem to be taking the clause.

Despite growing up in Germany and playing for Bochum, Borussia Dortmund, Nuremberg, to Schalke, Galatasaray will be Gundogan's next port.

Gundogan's signal to withdraw from Manchester City at the end of next season and join Galatasary was strengthened even though he said he was only focused on Etihad.

"Never say no (joining Galatasaray). It's going to be something I'm proud of."

"But, in the end, you have to look at the circumstances at a certain time. In fact, I'm here to play for the best club and the best football team in the world. So, I don't think anything is worth that at the moment," Gundogan said at The Daily Mail.

Galatasaray, who is the champion of the Turkish League (Super Lig) 24 times, is his team. Gundogan came from the family of supporters of the club nicknamed the liar.

Since his parents were born in Turkey, there will be an emotional element to play in Galatasaray if the deal finally happens.

"I feel connected here (Istanbul Turkey, Galatasaray headquarters). I have everything at my door. I, my wife, my child, we like to walk around the city, especially when it's quiet. Drink coffee or pastries."

"The people are very good. We are treated with great respect, people smile at us. That's why we feel very welcome and comfortable and happy here."

"This city has become the second home. After Gelsenkirchen, this city is where I spend most of my time in my life," said Gundogan again.
