Hong Kong Open 2024: Putri KW Becomes The Last Hope For Women's Singles

Putri Kusuma Wardani is the only women's singles in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open 2024 (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA Putri Kusuma Wardani is Indonesia's last hope from the women's singles sector after she alone managed to advance to the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open 2024.

The 22-year-old badminton player went through the second round of the tournament without breaking much sweat against former world number one and Taipei's first seed, Tai Tzu Ying, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, evening WIB.

The two only got eight points in total when Tai Tzu Ying decided to withdraw due to injury. He was 2-6 behind Putri when he had to withdraw from the tournament.

"Indeed, since last week at the China Taipei Open 2024, I have seen Tai Tzu Ying not 100 percent. Earlier he also looked a little sick, but I didn't know he would back down," Putri said in a statement received.

This result is Putri's second consecutive victory over the 30-year-old badminton player.

Women previously won their first competitive clash in the quarter-finals of the China Taipei Open 2024 last week in a fierce three-game match.

"Certainly not the game we want. I hope his injury is not serious and can recover soon. My best wishes to Tai Tzu Ying," said Putri.

Putri actually together with Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi qualified for the second round of the tournament. However, the two colleagues had already lifted their suitcases after being beaten together by representatives of Thailand.

Komang was eliminated after losing against Pornpawee Chochuwong, while bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Gregoria, lost against Ratchanok Intanon.
