Chinese Badminton Player Dies After Pingsan In BAJC 2024 Yogyakarta

Chinese badminton player died in the 2024 Badminton Asia Junior Championship (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA The young Chinese badminton player, Zhang Zhi Jie, died after collapsing while playing the 2024 Badminton Asia Junior Championship (BAJC) group stage match in Yogyakarta.

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) confirmed the information on the death of the men's singles badminton player through an official statement on Sunday, June 30, 2024, evening WIB.

"Zhang Zhi Jie from China fainted in the field during the night game, then was rushed to the hospital and died at 23.20 WIB," said PBSI in their official statement.

Zhang fainted while fighting the Japanese representative Kazuma Kabano. The incident occurred when the two badminton players were playing their first game match with a draw score of 11-11.

"Zhi Jie was playing a group stage match against Japan when he fainted and was treated by tournament doctors and a medical team. He was taken in an ambulance on standby in less than two minutes to be rushed to the hospital," the national badminton parent continued.

"Badminton Asia, PBSI and the Organizing Committee share their condolences and extend their deepest condolences to Zhang's parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA). The badminton world has lost talented players," they continued.

The group stage match itself was then won by China with a score of 3-2. Apart from Zhang who resigned and could not contribute points, China lost another point to the death of Xu Wen Jing's daughter.
