Bruno Fernandes Annoyed Manchester United's Performance Is Inconsistent, Unlike Against Liverpool

JAKARTA - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said he and his teammates were dissatisfied despite a draw at the headquarters of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

He questioned why the Red Devils could not perform with the same performance as against Liverpool every week.

Fernandes provided assists for Lisandro Martinez's opening goal in a 2-2 draw at Anfield, Sunday, January 5, 2025. The Portuguese player was also named the best player of the game for his performance.

The points gave Manchester United and Manager Ruben Amorim a little bit of relief which was needed after four consecutive defeats in all competitions, including successive league defeats to Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Bournemouth.

"I'm quite upset. If we show this against Liverpool, why can't we do it every week?"

"We said before the game, we needed more than ourselves to get something out of this season."

"We need to look forward. We need more. I'm not worried about people trying hard to fight Liverpool."

"Everyone will try their best (against Liverpool). I'm more worried about fighting Southampton (after playing against Arsenal in the FA Cup)," Fernandes told Sky Sports after the game.

The midfielder further added that his team's business level against the Reds was higher than the previous weeks.

"Today is about putting real efforts into the game, playing with passion."

"You have tactics, but in the end you need to try hard. That's why we got something out of today's game."

"It can't stop here. We have to take this taste to the next game."

"To understand that this should be our level, if we can do it at Anfield, we need to do it every week," said Fernandes.

Fernandes' comments were agreed by Ruben Amorim. The coach wants his troops to be consistent in appearances, at least as they can be against Liverpool, or better.

"I became more angry with other matches. It's even harder to understand a few things. It's not about the system, the technique, it's about other things."

"This is something that must be truly consistent. We have discussed this after (beaten) Manchester City, the result is the same."

"We can talk, but need to show and do our best. Tomorrow we will train and we must maintain the same level of mentality," said the 39-year-old coach.

Manchester United's next match is against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in the FA Cup Third Round.

Then, they will host Southampton on January 17, 2025 in the Premier League with their 13th position in the league after 20 matches.
