Pelita Jaya Failed To Reach The Semifinals Of BCL 2024

JAKARTA Pelita Jaya has certainly not qualified for the 2024 Basketball Championship League (BCL) semifinal which is currently taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

They actually haven't finished the preliminary round of Group B. Pelita Jaya still has one more match against the South Korean team, KCC Egis, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

However, Shahrdary Gorman's 94-81 victory over Hiroshima Dragonflies buried Pelita Jaya's dream. The tiebreak system of the three teams used by FIBA automatically made Pelita Jaya's position stay in third place in the group.

Pelita Jaya started the journey in the preliminary phase with unsatisfactory results. They lost 69-86 against Dragonflies in the inaugural match before rising to a 97-90 victory over Golan in the second match.

On the other hand, Gorman started their move in this tournament with a 102-79 win over KCC Egis. Then, Dragonflyes beat KCC Egis with a score of 107-77.

To reach the semifinals, the team must finish in first or second place in the group, which is now occupied by Dragonflies and Gorgean. The two teams locked the position after meeting on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

In those clashes, Gorman came out victorious. The result left them now entitled to the top position of the group, followed in a row by Dragonflies, Pelita Jaya, and KCC Egis.

The tiebreak system for the three FIBA teams has been used for a long time, including at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. This system does not include the bottom team in determining the points of the group stage involving four teams.

If Pelita Jaya can win against KCC Egis then their winning streak is 2-1 or the same as Gorman and Dragonflies. You see, between Pelita Jaya, Gorman, and Dragonflies they both beat each other.

However, Pelita Jaya has the least points difference compared to Gorman and Dragonflies. Gorman has a +6 record after winning 13 points against Dragonflies and losing 7 points to Pelita Jaya.

Dragonflies have +4 after winning 17 points from Pelita Jaya and losing 13 points to Gorman. Meanwhile, Pelita Jaya has a record of 10 with a 7-point victory over Golantan and a 17-point loss to Dragonflies.

Thus, whatever the difference in winning points for the Pelita Jaya vs KCC Egis match will not be calculated in the final calculation. The reason is, the position of the KCC is currently at the bottom of the group standings, aka the caretaker.
