PSSI Chairman Asks For Continuation Of Shin Tae-yong's Contract Not To Be Made A Polemic

Shin Tae-yong will be extended if he reaches the target in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup (doc. PSSI).

JAKARTA - PSSI General Chairperson (Ketum), Erick Thohir, asked that questions about the continuation of Shin Tae-yong's contract not continue to be debated.

He said there had been an agreement that was made and clearly arranged the fate of the South Korean coach.

The polemic of Shin Tae-yong's continuation in the Indonesian national team is heating up again following the success of the U-23 Indonesian national team in winning over Australia U-23.

The meeting in the second match of Group A of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup opened the Garuda Muda chance to advance to the quarter-finals.

If successfully escorting the U-23 Indonesian national team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, the target for Shin Tae-yong's contract extension will be met.

As is known, the 53-year-old architect has a contract until June 2024. However, if the target in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup is achieved, he will receive a contract extension from PSSI.

Previously, Shin Tae-yong also achieved the target of passing the Indonesian national team to the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup in February 2024.

This situation then made football lovers in the country urge PSSI to continue to extend Shin Tae-yong's contract.

Related to this, Erick Thohir has confirmed that there is an agreement made and there is no need to make a fuss.

"That's a commitment that we have agreed on together that there are targets for coach Shin Tae-yong as a professional and from me as a professional, he has an agreement."

"Well, don't be a polemic. So, there have been things agreed upon," said Erick Thohir when met in the Central Jakarta area on Friday, April 19, 2024, afternoon WIB.

"What if you don't qualify for the last eight (the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup)? Yes, that's just a different assessment. However, I and PSSI stand tall above professionalism."

"When we agree, that's what we hold. Satisfied or not (Shin Tae-yong's performance)? Yes, satisfied," said Erick again.

Erick Thohir further emphasized that as far as his leadership at PSSI, he wanted to implement better professionalism. This cannot be separated from the hope that Indonesian football can continue to grow.

"Yes, we hope that our football achievements will be even more. Incidentally, if we were at the Southeast Asian level, now the Asian level."

"What does that mean? Yes, the government must increase its commitment. We PSSI as a professional management must also improve performance."

"So, it can't be if the government is committed, but PSSI is sleeping. Or, PSSI is moving, but it is not supported by the government. Yes, it is finished," he said.
