Gregoria Mariska Becomes An Athlete With An Important Breakthrough 2023 Version Of BWF

Tunggal putri Gregoria Mariska Tunjung dapat gelar Pebulu Badminton dengan Terobosan Penting 2023 versi BWF (dok. PBSI).

JAKARTA The women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is included in the Athlete's Association with an Important Breakthrough in 2023 according to the International Badminton Federation (BWF) version.

The 2017 Junior World Champion is the only Indonesian athlete on the list. He is with seven other singles/pairs who are valued in this category.

The title of the athlete with this important breakthrough was given by the world badminton parent thanks to Gregoria's success in winning Japan's Kumamoto Masters 2023, the BWF Super 500 level event.

"A stunning victory of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung over Olympic champion Chen Yufei, in the final of the 2023 Japanese Kumamoto Masters made history as she became the first Indonesian women's singles player to win a Super 500 title or above it (equivalent to Superseries) since Superseries was launched in 2007," wrote BWF.

Before defeating Chen Yufei in the final in two straight games, Gregoria, who was the sixth seed in the event, first stopped Nozomi Okuhara, Kim Ga Eun, Yeo Jia Min, and Beiwen Zhang.

Japan Masters isn't the only tournament Gregoria has won this year. The Wonogiri badminton player also won Madrid Spain Masters.

Pada ajang ini, Gregoria meraih gelar setelah menghentikan nama besar Carolina Marin di semifinal dan Pusarla Sindhu di final. Kedua nama ini adalah mantan juara dunia.

Apart from the two titles, Gregoria is also runner-up at the 2023 Malaysia Masters. He failed to lift the trophy from this event after losing against Akane Yamaguchi in the final.

Apart from Gregoria, other badminton players who entered the list with Gregoria were Kunlavut Vittidsarn, Li Shi Feng, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, Lin Chun, Kodai Naraoka, HS Prannoy, and Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning.
