Djokovic's Opportunity To Overtake Federer And Set A Record At ATP Finals

JAKARTA – Tennis player Novak Djokovic is chasing Roger Federer's title record when he appears at the 2023 ATP Finals which will take place from 12 to 19 November in Turin, Italy.

The tennis player from Serbia currently has six titles in this event. He is paired with retired Swiss tennis player Roger Federer.

Djokovic won his sixth title last season. If he is able to defend his title, he will automatically pass Federer as the tennis player who has won the most prestigious events at the end of this year.

"I try to be a good student of the game and follow developments, but at the same time I also want to direct my attention to the next challenge," he said as reported by the ATP website.

"As long as I am still an active player, I think that [chasing records] will be the mentality that I will maintain," he added.

The opportunity for Djokovic to pass Federer is open after seeing his brilliant journey this season, especially his success in winning three grand slams this season.

Djokovic initially equaled Rafael Nadal's all-time record of 22 grand slam singles titles at the Australian Open at the start of the year. He then shot past that mark with two subsequent wins, at Roland Garros and the US Open respectively.

In addition, he also extended his Masters 1000 title streak by winning his 39th and 40th titles at that level in Cincinnati and Paris, respectively.

He will add two other valuable records to finish at number one in the world for the eighth time and pass 400 weeks in that position if he is able to maintain his top position in Turin later.

However, Djokovic's journey to realize his dream of passing Federer will not be easy. The reason is, the ATP Finals is an event that is attended by tennis players who are ranked in the top eight of the ATP.

"Every match will feel like the final of a big tournament because you are facing the top eight players. Every match has a lot of points for the ATP ranking. [So] it is very important," he said.

Djokovic came to Turin this year with a hard court win-loss record of 33-1 this season. The only defeat he suffered was to Daniil Medvedev in the Dubai semifinals.

Overall, Djokovic has a win-loss record of 51-5 this year. These statistics make the 36 year old tennis player lead the ATP Tour with a win rate of 91 percent.
