Shin Tae-yong Accuses Referees Of Being The Cause Of Indonesia's Defeat Against Malaysia

JAKARTA The coach of the Indonesian national team Shin Tae-yong accused the referee of being the cause of his team's defeat against Malaysia in the group phase of the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup.

Indonesia lost 1-2 against Malaysia in the first match of Group B at Rayong Stadium, Thailand, Friday, August 18 evening WIB.

Garuda took the lead before getting a comeback.

"I want to highlight Malaysia's first goal from the penalty. It was not a violation," said the South Korean tactician after the match.

Indonesia led the match through Ramadan Sananta's goal in the 28th minute.

The Malayan tiger then reversed the position through two goals netted bytunate Tierney.

Tierney's first goal to equalize was scored from the spot. Referee Hiroki Kasahara awarded a penalty after Kadek Ariel Priyatna was deemed to have violated Tierney.

Shin Tae-yong said that it was this penalty that changed the course of the match. He said the referee had made a mistake with the decision.

"I don't think it was a violation. The referee needs to evaluate it. After that incident it changed our game," said the 52-year-old coach.

Garuda troops still have one group stage match against Timor Leste on Sunday, August 20 tomorrow. The result of that match can take the Indonesian chance to the semifinals.
