JAKARTA - Pep Guardiola thinks Manchester City should win the Champions League more than once to be called a big team in Europe. He has no doubts about the flexibility of his team, but that's not enough.
Guardiola felt they needed European success to actually make history as a big team.
Currently, The Citizens are strong favorites to win the Champions League for the first time this season. They will fight Inter Milan in the final after getting rid of defending champions Real Madrid.
"This team is very good but I agree with the media or when people say you have to lift the European (trophy), and you have to lift it again, to be considered in the same type as the 'other' team," Guardiola said.
"The teams won in Europe, not just once, but many times. We haven't," he continued.
City has been a frightening force in domestic competitions since Guardiola took over as manager since 2016. Unfortunately, the glory is contagious in Europe because City have always felt they have failed in the Champions League.
The closest was their failure in the 2021 Champions League final when they fell from Chelsea.
"The joy (of the win) is very fun. It's amazing being here. Nothing will change for us if we lift it, but if we want to be considered one of the best teams, we have to win the Champions League," said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach.
"My opinion will not change, but to be in the history book, we must be in that position," he said again.
