Becoming UFC Lightweight Champion, Islam Makhachev: Alhamdulillah, This Is For Khabib And His Father

JAKARTA - Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira in two rounds via submission (lockdown) to win the UFC lightweight title in Abu Dhabi, last weekend.

After this victory, Makhachev thanked God for what he had given. He confessed, getting more than what he asked for.

"Thank God," said Makhachev, as quoted by The Sun. "I trained really hard for this moment."

"My whole life, when I was little, I trained for moments like this. I want to say thank you," he continued.

Makhachev then presented this belt to his former coach, the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He said the father of Khabib Nurmagomedov was the reason he became the champion.

"A few years ago, he told me 'you will be the champion'. So I wanted to give this belt to his son, Khabib," said Makhachev.

This victory brought the UFC lightweight championship belt back to Dagestan. This belt was first won by Khabib after defeating Al Iaquinta in April 2018.

"He and his father have shaped me," he said.
