3 Important Points in Gianni Infantino and Jokowi's Discussion

JAKARTA - FIFA President Gianni Infantino fulfilled his promise to come to Indonesia to meet President Joko Widodo. There were three important points discussed in the meeting related to the Kanjuruhan tragedy.

Infantino arrived at around 11.58 am at the State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, October 18. The arrival of senior officials of international football discussed further plans for the transformation of Indonesian football after the tragedy in Malang.

"Today I met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and earlier we had an important discussion about Indonesian football after the tragedy in Malang, October 1, 2022", Jokowi said at a press conference.

At the meeting, the two figures discussed in detail the steps that need to be taken so that a similar tragedy does not occur in the future. One of them is a transformation that must be carried out as a whole.

This transformation had previously been discussed by Jokowi and Infantino in their correspondence. Then the second point in this meeting is to ensure that the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia must be safe and run professionally.

Meanwhile, the next discussion is to review national football stakeholders, especially PSSI. The parent of national football is considered to be one of the parties most responsible for negligence in organizing league competitions.

"Thus, this agreement is a momentum for improving the Indonesian football system so that Indonesian football becomes pride and performs better in the future", said Jokowi.

The latest information mentions that the Kanjuruhan tragedy killed 133 people. The hundreds of casualties caused the league competition in Indonesia to be temporarily suspended pending the transformation process.

The Joint Independent Fact-Finding Team (TGIPF) in a report to Jokowi on October 14 stated that the death toll could be that many because tear gas was thrown/sprayed by security officers.

In the report, TGIPF also recommended that the General Chairperson of PSSI Mochamad Iriawan, and the board of directors should resign from their respective positions as a form of moral responsibility.
