JAKARTA - Kamaru Usman revealed the reason behind his decision not to waste time in the final minutes of the fifth round in his fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 278.

The 35-year-old fighter was on track to win, but never saw the clock. Instead, he simply praised Edwards' head kick technique for ending the fight.

"No, (a waste of time) it's not my (gaya)," Usman told TMZ Sports quoted by Marca, Tuesday.

"When I fight, there is a reason why I pedal a medal and I don't see a clock. That's how I fight. I want to finish it. It's a beautiful technique, a beautiful time.

He threw a head kick throughout the fight, but I blocked everything. I was almost amazed by how good (I blocked all the kicks) it was, but (the last kick) it happened.

"The champions fell and then they came back and showed you why they won."

What will happen to Kamaru Usman next?

Usman, who has not recorded a single defeat since May 2013, confirmed that he would return.

"I am a mixed martial arts artist and I am the best mixed martial arts artist in the world," added Usman.

"So, that's what I have to do. I need to prove it. Right now, I'm not thinking about anything other than that. When you sit on that throne, then you can do other things. Right now, I'm not sitting on that throne.

"I don't care about other worries. Let's focus on what we need to focus on first, namely getting back up and then we will decide."
