2022 BWF World Championship: Jonathan To The Quarter Finals, Meets Chou Tien Chen

JAKARTA - Indonesia's men's singles Jonatan Christie has successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2022 BWF World Championships in Japan. The gold medal holder of the 20218 Asian Games qualified by defeating the representative of Taiwan, Wang Tzu Wei, in two straight games 24-22 and 21-16 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Thursday, August 25.

The Indonesian representative faced a dramatic match in the first game before overcoming the opponent more easily in the second game.

Jonathan played tight on the opening six points before scoring four straight points after 3-3. He continued to maintain that advantage until a four-point lead at the interval.

Wang Tzu Wei actually managed to equalize the score 20-20 after being left behind for almost the entire game. However, he then gave up after being forced to add just two points.

The match was also tight at the start of the second game. The two players took turns in getting points before Jonathan managed to lead at the break with the same difference in points as in the first game.

Jonathan continued to maintain a large gap in numbers after the interval. He continued to stay away and managed to lead five points to win the game.

This victory made Jonathan reduce the win-loss with Wang to 5-7. Previously, Wang led a 7-4 win-loss after defeating Jonathan at the Malaysia Masters last June.

Next, Jonathan will face another Taiwanese representative, Chou Tien Chen, who is the fourth seed in this tournament. So far Jojo leads the record 6-3 encounter with Chou.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's representative in the mixed doubles has run out. Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari ran aground in the hands of the fourth seed, Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping.

Rinov/Pitha gave up two games straight from the Chinese representative with a score of 16-21 and 14-21.
