JAKARTA — Conor McGregor is now eyeing a gap in the welterweight title after Leon Edwards beat Kamaru Usman at UFC 278.

Edwards ended Nigerian Nightmare's dominance at the top of the welterweight division last weekend. Kamaru was knocked out with a stunning header in the fifth round with 56 seconds remaining.

Usman is immediately planning to face a trilogy fight with Edwards early next year. However, the plan didn't stop McGregor from expressing interest in competing for the belt.

"I want a gap in this title somewhere. Give it to me, give it to me, give it to me", McGregor wrote on his Twitter account, reported by The Sun.

McGregor, 34, has fought three welterweight fights during his UFC career. The Irish fighter failed to make his UFC 196 debut after suffering a second-round submission defeat against Nate Diaz.

But he won in the second and third octagon fights in the same class. He beat Diaz by unanimous decision at UFC 202 and took down Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds at UFC 246.

However, McGregor has shown no indication of returning to the octagon anytime soon.

The reason is, that he has not fully recovered from the broken leg he suffered in his last duel against Dustin Poirier in July last year.

Tim Simpson as McGregor's manager has also confirmed that The Notorious will not fight for the rest of the year. Apart from having not fully recovered, he will also prepare to debut as an actor starring in the film Road House.

"His leg is still healing, I think there's a bit more to do but he's been training like crazy. Twice a day, every day", Simpson said.
