JAKARTA — Arsenal have officially signed Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira. The 22-year-old player came with the status as the king of assists in the Portuguese team.
The Gunners announced their new signing on Tuesday, June 21 evening GMT+7 (Western Indonesian Time or WIB). To secure the services of the player, the London team poured funds of 40 million euros or IDR 625 billion.
"Fabio is a very creative player who will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking game," said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, cited from BBC Sport.
The club did not specify the duration of the proposed contract for the Portugal international. However, British media said Fabio was tied to a long-term contract until 2027.
Fabio has recently emerged as one of the most talented young stars in Europe. Last season he even impressed with Porto in the league by registering the number of assists more than half of his appearances.
He scored six goals and provided 14 assists in 27 Portuguese Primeira Liga games to help Porto claim the league title. The number of assists is the most in the competition compared to any other player.
Until now he has never strengthened the Portugal senior team. However, was voted the tournament's best player at last year's European Under-21 Championship.
"Fabio is a player of special quality who is comfortable with the ball in the final third," said Arsenal technical director Edu.
With these statistics, Fabio's arrival will make it easier for Arsenal's attackers. Especially young strikers like Nicolas Pepe, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, and Gabriel Martinelli.
