JAKARTA – Badminton Asia has completed the group draw for the 2022 Asian Team Badminton Championships. The Indonesian men's and women's teams immediately received a tough test because they were in the same group as the South Korean team.

The group draw takes place on Tuesday, February 8, in Selangor, Malaysia. The championship will be held from February 15 to 20.

The draw results put the Indonesian men's team into Group A along with India, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Kazakhstan.

In the women's sector, the Indonesian team led by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung was included in Group Z with South Korea, Hong Kong, and Kazakhstan, while Japan, India, and Malaysia were in Group Y.

Gregoria and her friends left the country using Malaysia Airlines flight number MH 720. They departed from Soerkarno-Hatta Airport, Cengkareng, Banten, on Monday, February 7 yesterday at 15:45 WIB.

For this year, the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) decided to send young representatives. This is done for the sake of the regeneration of athletes.

For this reason, the team list does not include names such as Jonatan Christie, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, to Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

"With the strength of young players, we are ready to compete with other countries. We ask for prayers and support from the Indonesian people so that we can achieve as expected", said team manager, Aryono Miranat.

Indonesia came as the defending champion in the men's sector of the tournament which was the qualification for the Thomas and Uber Cups. Not only the defending champion, but the Indonesian men's team is also the champion in the last three editions.

In the 2020 edition, the Indonesian men's team came out as champions after defeating Malaysia. The Red and White Team won with a landslide score of 3-1, in the final match which took place at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Philippines.
