Violating The Profitability Regulations, Derby County Sentenced To 21 Points Deduction

JAKARTA - The operator of England's three tiers under the Premier League, the EFL, on Tuesday announced the latest penalty handed down against Derby County for breaches of the club's profitability and sustainability regulations to a total reduction of 21 points for the 2021/22 season.

Derby had previously been handed a 12-point deduction after the club was declared bankrupt in September 2021 and last week agreed to drop the lawsuit over the sentence.

Derby later admitted a breach of regulation, resulting in the EFL's additional nine-point deduction with three points suspended.

The suspended three-point penalty will take full effect if Derby fail to meet the budget requirements set out in the joint decision for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

The EFL stated that the penalty for a total deduction of 21 points was final and could not be contested under applicable rules.

"In view of the complex circumstances of this case and the issue of breach of law between the EFL and Derby County, the league is satisfied with the mutual agreement and prudent approach taken by both parties and the club's decision to withdraw the lawsuit," said EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch, Tuesday.

"Our focus is on continuing to work closely with the Joint Administrators to help Derby County secure the club's long-term future."

Derby currently competes in England's second tier, the Championship league, and has recorded three wins and nine draws from 17 matches played.

However, with this latest penalty, the 18 points they got were all gone and now Wayne Rooney's team occupies the bottom of the standings with a score of minus three points.

Derby next host Bournemouth at Pride Park on Sunday.
