Is It True That Electric Cars Will Completely Turn Off When Battery Touches Zero Percent? This Is Hyundai's Answer

JAKARTA - Electric vehicles are booming in the global automotive industry as well in the country. However, not a few still question various things, one of which is what will happen when the EV battery is at zero percent.

Responding to this, Technical Expert of PT Hyundai Motor Indonesia (HMID) Sugiartono revealed that it turns out that electric cars can still run even though they are zero percent battery.

"This is actually in the buffer zone. So, even though it is at zero percent, EVs can still run to reach the nearest SPKLU (General Electric Vehicle Charging Station)," Sugiartono told the media in Semarang, Tuesday, October 9.

Sugiartono also revealed that even though the EV battery was zero percent, the vehicle could still run as far as 2 km to almost 4 km.

"This situation has been considered by an engineer, so in a state of zero percent it can still run 2-3 km. In fact, it can reach almost 4 km," he added.

Meanwhile, PT HMID Product Expert Moh Ikhsan Satriawinandi added that although EV batteries have reached zero percent, the electricity system in electric cars can still work as they should.

"The main battery is running out, while the car control is from the 12V battery. So the electricity can operate," he explained.

Thus, he explained that electric cars that run out of power are still switching transmissions to N (neutral) to make it easier for vehicle users to push them to the charging site.

"This can be transferred to N, so the car can be easily pushed," explained Ikhsan.

However, the Professional of Cell Technology Assembly of PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Muhammad Afif added that Hyundai did not recommend using EVs of up to zero percent and appealed to charge it immediately before 20 percent.

"For example, traveling long distances, of course, the distance between SPKLUs is further, so it is recommended to leave the power at 20 percent, just in case," Afif said.
