Defeat Tesla, BMW Masters European Electric Car Market For The First Time

JAKARTA - Sales of electric cars in Europe were not doing well, especially in July which fell by 6 percent.

Despite the decline in positive achievements obtained by German manufacturer BMW who managed to beat Tesla and became the leader of the electric car market in Europe in July 2024. This is the first time BMW has managed to occupy the top position in the sale of electric cars in the region.

Launching Carscoops, August 23, from data from JATO (World automotive and automotive global market list) BMW managed to increase its electric car sales by 35 percent compared to the previous year by recording sales of 14,869 BEV units during July or narrowly superior to Tesla.

Tesla, which has previously always dominated the electric car market in Europe, had to settle for the second position selling 14,561 units. Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Europe with 9,544 units sold successfully, but Tesla's overall sales have decreased.

Models such as the BMW iX1 SUV and BMW i4 Gran Coupe also contributed greatly to BMW's success.

Global analyst from JATO Felipe Munoz stated that uncertainty over incentives and the future of electric cars is still an obstacle for consumers. This, along with the low residual value of electric cars, contributed to a decline in sales in July.

Meanwhile, the overall type of car model for both electricity and non-electricity in Europe in July was Dacia Sandero with 22,398 units sold successfully. This gasoline car remains the consumer's favorite choice.

Volkswagen still leads the European auto market in general in terms of brand sales with a successful overall registration of 108,959 units, followed by Toyota (75,338 units) and BMW (64,012 units), Skolda (59,727 units), and 5th-placed Mercedes 59,545 (units).

Interestingly from the JATO data, it is found that the popularity of the SUV continues to increase, with five out of ten best-selling cars being SUVs.
