Handayani's Daughter Is Getting Closer To Southeast Asian Record

JAKARTA The female climber from Indonesia, Putri Handayani, needs two more steps to become the first woman in Southeast Asia to have the status of The Explorer's Grand Slam.

Putri, on January 8, 2025, has completed her seventh mission by reaching the top of Vinson (4,892 meters above sea level), the highest mountain on the Antarctic continent, and flying the Red and White flag there.

"This is not only about climbing, but also about proving that Indonesian women are able to face big challenges in any field," said Putri.

The climb by Putri to reach the top of Vinson has been going on since January 4, 2025. This success is one of the historic moments as well as the first achievement gift for Indonesia at the beginning of this year.

Mount Vinson is known as one of the biggest challenges for climbers. Its location approaching the South Pole makes the air pressure on this mountain relatively lower when compared to the mountains in other locations.

"I dedicate this climbing to Indonesia and to all women who believe that big dreams can be achieved with determination and effort," said the woman who was born in Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra, that.

This success takes Putri even more with a record that has been mentioned above. He only needs to conquer the highest mountain in the world, Everest, and explore the Arctic to secure the title.

The Explorer's Grand Slam is an achievement given to a climber if he manages to foot at the seven highest mountain peaks on seven continents and conducts explorations into the Arctic and the South Pole.

The effort to realize The Explorer's Grand Slam began by Putri since 2016. In that year, she managed to reach Kilimanjaro's highest point in Africa and Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, respectively in February and August.

The following year, the alumni of the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Engineering conquered Mount Elbrus in Russia. Then in 2018 he managed to reach Mount Accagua, Argentina (South America).

The daughter then took approximately six years for the next two missions. Starting with the peak of Mount Denali in the United States in June 2022 and continuing with Mount Vinson earlier this year.

The plan is for Putri to complete the remaining two missions to get a record in the next two years. She will start with climbing to Everest in the middle of this year and exploring the North Pole in 2026.
