JAKARTA - Indonesian wave surf athlete Rio Waida managed to get a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games qualifying event at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Saturday local time or early Sunday morning WIB.
Rio won the Paris Olympics slot after completing the Repechage 10 round in second place with 10.93 points to advance to Repechage 11 of the event held by the International Surfing Association (ISA).
"This is something to be proud of considering Rio twice managed to enter the Olympics. Yesterday in Tokyo, now in Paris. And yesterday in Tokyo it was the first time surfing was contested at the Olympics," said head coach of the Indonesian surfing national team Arya Subyakto to Antara by telephone, Sunday morning (3/3).
"And this is proof that surfing must also get more attention. Because this is the seventh sport to get an Olympic ticket. Hopefully with Rio's achievements we will get attention and we will give birth to other athletes."
Apart from Rio Waida, Indonesia sent three other athletes to take part in the final qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics for surfing. They are I Ketut Agus Aditya Putra, Dhany Widianto, and Jasmine Michelle Studder for the women's sector.
