JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD requested that the successful implementation and security of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) could continue during the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) which will be held from November 2 to November 15.

This was conveyed by him when he chaired a meeting to evaluate the implementation of PON security and preparation for Peparnas security at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, August 26.

Starting the meeting, Mahfud, who was accompanied by Menpora Zainuddin Amali and Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, thanked and appreciated the security forces at the central and regional levels for the implementation of the Papua PON in a safe, comfortable, and wide welcome from the community.

"As the person in charge of security for the implementation of PON and Peparnas based on the Presidential Instruction, I express my gratitude and appreciation, as well as hope that the success of securing PON in Papua will continue until the successful security of Peparnas in November," Mahfud said in a written statement quoted Wednesday, October 27.

He also said that Papua XVI Peparnas would also be implemented by implementing health protocols to avoid the emergence of COVID-19 clusters.

"Don't let Peparnas make a stain, that's why we meet today to ensure security and enforcement of health protocols during the event that will take place in Jayapura," said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK).

Meanwhile, Menpora Zainuddin Amali said there are other things that need attention besides security issues and health protocols. One of them is related to priority services.

At least, there are 12 sports contested by Papua XVI Peparnas and all of them will take place in Jayapura Regency and City. "Even though the National Sports Committee has fewer athletes and officials, which are around 3500 people, they are more sensitive because it needs better service quality than PON," he concluded.
