A Number Of Buildings In Blitar Regency Damaged By The Malang Earthquake

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 centered at 8.84 South Latitude and 112.51 East Longitude or 78 kilometers southwest of Malang Regency, East Java caused damage to a number of buildings in Blitar Regency, East Java.

In a written statement from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the shock was felt with moderate strength for two to four seconds in Blitar Regency.

A visual report from the Blitar Regency BPBD shows that the roof of the terrace of the An-Nur Mosque building in Binangun District, Blitar Regency, was damaged and fell to the ground.

Other damage to buildings according to the temporary assessment included the Sarang Village office building which was reported to be lightly damaged, a house unit was lightly damaged, a Sidorejo Village art hall building was slightly damaged, and a Binangun Subdistrict office building was slightly damaged.

The BPBD of Blitar Regency continues to carry out assessments and coordination with cross-agency to collect data on the impacts caused by the earthquake.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in its official statement said that the 5.3 M earthquake in Malang Regency was a medium-sized earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate against the Eurasian plate.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.

According to the BMKG, shocks were also felt in the areas of Ponorogo, Malang, Pasuruan, Nganjuk, Mojokerto, Pacitan, Lumajang, Jember and Trenggalek. As of Friday at 09:43 a.m., the BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity.

The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified. In addition, the community is asked to avoid cracked or damaged buildings and always ensure that their residential buildings are earthquake-resistant.
